About Al and Marcia's Family
Welcome to our family tree. This project is a work in progress. Names
of living persons are usually not displayed to protect privacy. However names
may briefly appear if we have had a specific request to show them.
Updates, comments and corrections are always welcome. We are in the process
of adding sources to our website.
Marcia's family arrived from Pomerania, Luxembourg and Germany in the mid
to late 1800's. Lines in her tree include Luedtke, Boettcher, Seegebarth,
Pompe, Haack, Theisen and Kienitz. Many settled first in IL and WI before
finding their way to Kossuth County, IA. The majority of these early settlers
were farmers. The families were predominately Lutheran, although the
Luxembourg families were Catholic.
Most of Al's family has been in America since the early 1700's. These names
include Culbertson, Rouse, Miller, Fountain, and Bell. The Culbertsons and
Bells were Scotch Irish Protestants, settling in PA and OH before our branches
of these families migrated to Iowa in the late 1800 and early 1900's.
Rouse origins are thought to be German. The first verified ancestor was found
in PA in the late 1700's. The Rouses belonged to the United Brethren Church.
We have found no evidence to indicate they were members of the Pennsylvania Dutch
Community. Family accounts do record very strict religious practices by the early
Rouse generations in Pennsylvania and Iowa.
Al's Great Grandfather, Karl Ewodlt was the latest arrival to the US,
entering through Ellis Island in 1904. The Ewoldt and Wiese families in his
tree are both from the Schlesweig Holstein area of Germany, near the Baltic
Sea.
Culbertsons have made a mark in the history and early development
of this country. Among their ranks are noted military officers, politicians,
physicians, explorers, artists, musicians and members of the clergy. There
are too many lines and branches of this family to document on this website. We
included Al's direct line, with a side step or two to include some extended
lines of interest to our family. Old stories existed regarding family ties to
the Culbertson Mansion in New Albany, Indiana, and to the western explorer
Alexander Culbertson. With some digging, we were able to verify that Al's
family and these people do share a common ancestor, Lt Colonel Robert
Culbertson, of Culbertson's Row, PA - born in 1755.
